The Role
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Building Control Manager to lead our Building Control Team. You will be responsible for managing the full function of the service, ensuring it meets statutory requirements, national targets, and remains financially sustainable. This is a strategic leadership role with operational oversight of a skilled team including Area Building Control Officers, Building Control Officers, Trainees, and Assistants.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Building Control function, including human, physical, and financial resources.
Oversee all aspects of Building Regulations, including fee processing, property certificates, dangerous structures, and enforcement.
Develop and deliver statutory inspection programmes and ensure compliance with legislation.
Manage budgets and charging schemes to ensure full cost recovery.
Promote and market the Building Control service to maintain and grow market share.
Maintain professional knowledge and implement continuous service improvements.
Prepare business plans, performance indicators, and policy documents.
Foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Criteria
Degree or equivalent qualification in a building-related discipline (e.g. Architecture, Civil/Structural Engineering).
Full corporate membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CABE, RICS, CIOB, ICE, IStructE, RIBA).
Proven experience in service planning, team management, and enforcement of legislation.
In-depth knowledge of Building Control legislation and related frameworks.
Understanding of local government operations and service delivery challenges.
Full, clean driving licence and access to a motor vehicle.
Working Environment
This role is primarily office-based but includes site visits to dangerous structures, sports stadia, and construction sites. You’ll need to be comfortable working across departments and occasionally outside standard hours. The ability to manage challenging environments and situations is essential.
