Take responsibility for the assessment of building regulation and warranty applications for residential developments and associated non-residential uses typically up to 11 metres high. Negotiate with developers, builders and their professional advisors, from initial design to completion, to ensure proposals are satisfactory in relation to building control and warranty in accordance with relevant regulations / NHBC Standards. About the Building Control Surveyor / Senior Building Control Surveyor role
Take responsibility for the assessment of building regulation and warranty applications for residential developments and associated non-residential uses typically up to 11 metres high. Negotiate with developers, builders and their professional advisors, from initial design to completion, to ensure proposals are satisfactory in relation to building control and warranty in accordance with relevant regulations / NHBC Standards. Responsibility for the co-ordination of building control inspections, issue of Final Certificates, site and type approvals and resolving problems relating to Initial Notices / Final certification. Manage the Building Regulation and Warranty aspects by supporting inspection staff with the provision of expert advice, inspection of high risk / complex elements or features of building work, the identification / communication of key inspection stages and review of progress. Undertake surveys and assessments of existing buildings for suitability for NHBC Buildmark Conversions and Renovations Cover, including the provision of advice, preparation of reports and offers / refusals of insurance cover
Our ideal Building Control Surveyor / Senior Building Control Surveyor
- Chartered membership of an appropriate professional institution (RICS, CABE, CIOB) - Experience in the construction industry with relevant experience in Building Control - Experience of plan appraisal of residential developments and associated non-residential uses - Awareness of forensic investigations of buildings, defect identification and repair - Proven ability to make pragmatic and value decisions on compliance with Building Regulations and NHBC Standards - Able to work with the minimum of supervision, in line with established policies and procedures - Knowledge of environmental issues and relevant standards/legislation - IT literate with the ability to use a range of software programs - Good communication skills both verbal and written with appropriate interpersonal skills.
Salary / Benefits you’ll receive as our Building Control Surveyor / Senior Building Control Surveyor:
- £34,500 - £46,500 depending on experience, location and including remote worker allowance
- Up to 6% performance related bonus

Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) are seeking to recruit two Senior Building Control Surveyors.
EFDC are in the process of changing how they think about service delivery in the future and this role is a key part of that process. The district is facing an unprecedented period of growth, which will bring changes in demographics, in the types of services required and, in the ways, people access those services.
The drivers for change are:
Customers – building services around the people we serve
Efficiency – Making the very best of our people, time and money
Effectiveness – An agile flexible workforce achieving our ambitions and working together and in partnership
As a Senior Building Control Surveyor you will work as part of a small, motivated team and will be responsible for examining plans, negotiating with applicants and advising on different ways to satisfy the Building Regulations whilst furthering the interests of Local Authority Building Control
You will also be required to conduct site visits to inspect building works under construction and provide technical advice to members of the public and elected Members. As part of this you will investigate and qualify acceptable solutions, ensuring matters of Health & Safety and Building Regulation compliance are adhered to. You will also be confident in assessing and instructing action to remedy dangerous buildings and structures and be conversant with the enforcement powers outlined in the Building Act 1984.
To be successful for the Senior Building Control Surveyor vacancy, you must have a recognised building qualification/degree and a sound knowledge of Building Regulations and the building process. Membership of a relevant professional body such as the RICS, CABE or CIOB is desirable.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential as you will be liaising with members of the public and building relationships with architects and builders. You must be IT literate and possess a full driving licence. Access to a vehicle is essential.
As part of the interview process you will be assessed on how you embody the Council’s core values and behaviours.
