Architects

An Architect uses a combination of technical skills and creative vision to create, extend, or alter/buildings structure. 

Architects in construction plays an important role and they are responsible for the design and visual appearance of the buildings and structures before its final completion. The Architect is a person appointed by the client, who works with other consultants to develop and facilitate the design concept and the requirements specified by the client, to deliver the finished product. 

A Day in the Life of an Architect 

Mostly based in an office or working from home  Architects may be required to attend regular site visits and attend Design Team meetings with other consultants, contractors, and clients to ensure that the clear scope of the project is known and understood by all . Architects are involved on projects from the very beginning to the end and make sure that steps are followed according to their specifications and working drawings. Working with other professionals they  monitor  the financial budgets and deadlines, as well as ensuring that the environmental impact of the project is managed. 

Architects need to take many things into account, such as drawing up tenders, negotiating with other contractors, and problem solving. 

Frequently, Architects will have to: 

  • design buildings, structures, and extensions from concept ideas
  • draw up technical architectural plans
  • project manage, ensuring good communication within the design team and between the different contractors and client
  • co-ordinate the deadlines on time-sensitive aspects of a project
  • determine the kind and quality of components
  • keep up to date with industry standards. 

This is a highly dynamic role and will utilise different skills on any given day. Communication is a strong part of this role, as Architects are vital for the functioning and delivery of a project. 

Traits and Skillsets of an Architect 

Creativity and a design flair are the most important for an Architect in addition excellent communication skills as they are co-ordinating and relaying an enormous amount of information to all sections of the project team. Time management and budgetary management are also key skills to have in this line of work. Those with a propensity to creative vision underpinned by a highly methodical mindset will excel. Drawing skills can be honed over time, yet a desire to practice and develop these skills is a must. An understanding of mathematics and complex, detailed processes and an eye for detail  are is also an important skill for someone interested in becoming an Architect. 

Career Pathways 

Registration with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) is essential for using the title Architect. Architects are also strongly encouraged to become a member of a chartered association like the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) so that they can fulfil their annual CPD requirements. Through these steps, an Architect can rise to more senior roles, often after five years of working in the industry. With extensive experience, many Architects will set up their own practices.

Salary Expectations 

Ranging from £15,000 to £70,000 with growing experience and chartered memberships. 

Relevant Experience and Studies 

It is common for most Architects to have studied a recognised degree in Architecture, however, other routes include an architecture apprenticeships or practice-based courses which can be completed while working.
