Quantity Surveyor

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor in the Cambridgeshire area.

The successful candidate will be joining a growing civils and groundworks team. You will play a key role in pricing works, managing commercial risk, and supporting the delivery of profitable projects.

This role suits a commercially aware individual with strong knowledge of civils and groundworks from a subcontractor perspective, capable of working independently while supporting senior management.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating

  • Prepare accurate and competitive tenders for civils and groundworks packages
  • Undertake take-offs from drawings and specifications
  • Assess risk, opportunities, and value engineering options
  • Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations

Commercial Management

  • Prepare and submit valuations and applications for payment
  • Manage variations, including identification, pricing, and negotiation
  • Assist with cost control and reporting throughout the project lifecycle
  • Support cash flow forecasting and commercial planning

Data & Systems

  • Build, maintain, and develop an estimating and cost database
  • Carry out cross-analysis of historical project data to improve future tenders
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating procedures

General

  • Work closely with project teams, directors, and clients
  • Ensure commercial compliance with contracts and company procedures
  • Manage multiple tenders while meeting strict deadlines

Key Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Strong knowledge of civils and groundworks (subcontractor experience preferred)
  • Proven experience in estimating and quantity surveying
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and commercial awareness
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Confident communication and negotiation skills

Desirable

  • Experience with NEC or JCT contracts
  • Familiarity with UK construction procurement processes
  • Experience in cost reporting and forecasting
