Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor in the Cambridgeshire area.
The successful candidate will be joining a growing civils and groundworks team. You will play a key role in pricing works, managing commercial risk, and supporting the delivery of profitable projects.
This role suits a commercially aware individual with strong knowledge of civils and groundworks from a subcontractor perspective, capable of working independently while supporting senior management.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating
- Prepare accurate and competitive tenders for civils and groundworks packages
- Undertake take-offs from drawings and specifications
- Assess risk, opportunities, and value engineering options
- Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations
Commercial Management
- Prepare and submit valuations and applications for payment
- Manage variations, including identification, pricing, and negotiation
- Assist with cost control and reporting throughout the project lifecycle
- Support cash flow forecasting and commercial planning
Data & Systems
- Build, maintain, and develop an estimating and cost database
- Carry out cross-analysis of historical project data to improve future tenders
- Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating procedures
General
- Work closely with project teams, directors, and clients
- Ensure commercial compliance with contracts and company procedures
- Manage multiple tenders while meeting strict deadlines
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
- Strong knowledge of civils and groundworks (subcontractor experience preferred)
- Proven experience in estimating and quantity surveying
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
- Strong numerical, analytical, and commercial awareness
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications
- Confident communication and negotiation skills
Desirable
- Experience with NEC or JCT contracts
- Familiarity with UK construction procurement processes
- Experience in cost reporting and forecasting
